At the conclusion of the June 1967 War, Israel, the West Bank and Gaza Strip were united under a single sovereignty for the first time since the end of the British Mandate for Palestine nineteen years earlier. Reunited, the struggle for historical Palestine returned to a competition between two national movements, Zionism and Palestinian nationalism, that made claims to the same piece of land. This book uses the official political discourse of the Israeli and Palestinian national movements to trace the evolution of each side?s future vision in an attempt to understand why this conflict has been so intractable. With this reading of party platforms, faction charters, speeches and laws, it becomes clear that after forty-five years of occupation, the contemporary Palestinian and Israeli future visions are not merely contradictory but fundamentally opposed and completely irreconcilable despite the attempts of the Oslo Peace Process to bring about a permanent peace.
